Linette to meet Swan in WTA Chennai Open semi-finals

Third seed Magda Linette, of Poland, reached her first WTA Tour semi-final of the year after a hard-fought straight sets win over the seventh seeded Rebecca Marino, of Canada, at the WTA Chennai Open on Friday night.

Linette and Marino went toe-to-toe in the first set with Pole taking a 4-2 lead and then breaking again to lead 6-5 but both times Marino battled back to take the set into a tiebreak. Linette saved two set points in a marathon tiebreaker before finally winning it 12-10 on her fourth set point.

The Pole started the second set much more confidently and moved ahead 5-1. Although Marino got one break back to 5-3, Linette was able to hold serve to complete the 7-6, 6-3 win in one hour and 53 minutes.

In the second semi-final of the session, Great Britain’s Katie Swan reached her first WTA level semi-final with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Japan’s qualifier Nao Hibino.
